The Editor in Me; the Editor in You

The editor thing might very well be hard-wired because both of my kids have a tendency to correct both grammar and pronunciation on a fairly regular basis. If Ella makes a grammar misstep in speech--the wrong verb tense, an incorrectly formed plural--she corrects herself almost immediately. Sadie isn't a stickler for grammer--yet. But she IS a stickler for pronunciation. Which leads to a game I like to play with her that may seem mean to some, but hey, a mom has to get her kicks somewhere.

Ella's pronunciation was pretty much stellar from the get-go, so she didn't have many of the charming "baby" mispronunciations that you'd expect from a toddler. Sadie, on the other hand, has a few words that she can't quite say yet.

She can't, for example, pronounce "yellow." Instead, she says "lellow." However, if you say "lellow" to Sadie, she will correct you: "No! Not "lellow!" It's LELLOW!" Ah, okay. My mistake.

I can have endless fun playing this game with Sadie. Unfortunately, it might be the kind of fun you actually have to be there to appreciate.

Funny enough, Ella can't say "regular" for the life of her. But Sadie can. She has endless fun teasing her sister with her flawless pronunciation of the word. I wonder where she gets that from?
